It is undeniable that our tongue is indeed one of the most important parts of our mouth. I mean, how could you taste the sweet chocolates if you don't have a tongue? How will you be able to clearly speak without your tongue? But then, did you know that aside from tasting foods and speaking, your tongue can also be a way for you to identify if you're suffering from a severe illness?
Here are some of the illness that can be identified through the change of your tongue's appearance:
1. Lumpy white or yellowish cottage cheese appearance of your tongue
- This means that you have an oral thrush or yeast infection. Antibiotics won't help you stop this disease, thus, it will just make things worse. The best thing to do is to consult a doctor right away.
2. Scattered white patches
- When you see that you have these mysterious white patches on your tongue that are painful, it means that you're suffering from Leukoplakia. You better consult your specialist right away.
3. White with smooth pattern or film
- If you noticed this on your tongue, this just means that you are lacking oral hygiene. This can often be seen in children's tongues who are milk-drinkers. No need to panic, all you have to do is to brush your tongue.
4. Smooth red tongue
- Having a smooth red tongue simply means that you are suffering from Vitamin B12 deficiency or anemia.
5. Red inflamed tongue or Strawberry tongue appearance
- This condition is called the Kawasaki disease or the Scarlet fever that often appears when a child suffers from fever and rashes.
6. Purple tongue
- Whenever you have a purple tongue that was not caused by the beverage that you drank, then it simply means that you have a problem with your blood circulation.
7. Black hairy tongue
- This means that you are suffering from Lingua Villosa Nigra wherein your papillae are growing longer than the usual.
8. Persistent red big or small lesions
- If you witness this on your tongue, you better seek for a doctor's help because this might lead you to a tongue cancer.
9. Wrinkles and cracks
- Believe it or not, the cracks and wrinkles on your tongue simply show that you're already aging.
10. Pinkish with hills and valleys
- Congratulations, this simply shows that you have a normal tongue.
